Academic Pep Rally

Academic pep rallies were held in the auditorium as students face impending state examinations.  Students were entertained by the high school band and danceline under the direction of Professor Jenkins and Ms. Kelecia Bryant.  The first pep rally ninth and twelfth grade students received motivational messages from Coach Preston, Coach Bursey and Mrs. Phillips.  Ninth grade students will take the iLEAP and seniors who have completed all testing were on hand to encourage their underclassmen.  Coach Preston reminded the students to get ready with a great breakfast, plenty of rest and to set their clocks to the daylight savings time which will go into effect this weekend.  Students were challenged to do their very best on the exams.  Mrs. Phillips encouraged the students to chant “YES, WE CAN!” to her barrage of challenges – “We can make top scores; we can do our best . . .”

The sophomores and juniors who will take the Graduation Exit Examinations were motivated by Mrs. Benton, Coach Bursey and Mr. Graham.   Coach Bursey cautioned the students, “Don’t let what you don’t know, interfere with what you do know.”  Mr. Graham brought the audience to its feet with his advice and antics on how to remain on task when testing.  He pepped the students with repeats and ended with his dancing with the band.

C. through the Close Up program for high school students and educators.  This program develops students' knowledge of basic concepts of government and citizenship.  Our students can expect to gain a greater understanding of the rights and responsibilities of citizens in a participatory democracy and learn how constituents, interest groups and party politics affect the legislative process.  They will have onsite study-visits, see the city's monuments and memorials, explore the Smithsonian museums and enjoy the cultural diversity of Washington's historic neighborhoods.  They will also have the opportunity to spend time with Senators Landrieu and Vitter of Louisiana, Representative Jim McCrery and staff.  Fair Park students earned their way to the Washington experience by applying with the Close Up adviser, Mrs. Maxile and working throughout the school year to earn funding collectively to help defray their costs to the Capitol.  Students and their parents parked cars on campus for the Saints/Cowboys football game and during the Independence Bowl. There were other fundraising experiences during the year.   Accompanying our students on this years' program during the week of March 25 - 31 are Mrs. Maxile and Mrs. Gallion.

Defending Two-Time Tournament Champs Settle for Second

The Fair Park Indians,  two-time defending champions of the Bossier Invitational Boys Basketball Tournament which is the longest running in the area, had to settle for second place after a hard fought battle with arch-rival Huntington Raiders by a score of 54-67 on January 6, 2007.  This meeting would mark the sixth time the two teams met in basketball competition and would ultimately split games won at three apiece.  En route to the championship game, Fair Park beat Byrd 71-67; Parkway 68-56; and DeRidder 60-50.  The Indians are 17-4 having lost three games to Huntington and one to Bossier earlier in the season.  One factor that perhaps made a difference in the outcome of the game was the absence of starter Morris Claiborne who sat out much due to a sprained ankle.  Morris' efforts in earlier games had him selected to the All-Tournament team along with teammate Senior Markcus Jackson.  Markcus, with his smooth style of basketball control and seemingly effortless ability to make baskets, has been named to the All-Tournament selections in each tournament the Indians have participated this year.  Congratulations Indians.  We are proud of you!

Indians Tops in Parkway Tournament

The Indians of Fair Park were winners of the Parkway Tournament in Bossier City during the weekend of December 9.  To get to the top bill, the Indians had to defeat three teams.  They beat Northwood (score not available), Airline (54 - 40), and the host team Parkway (56 - 39) to meet Huntington High of Shreveport.  In the final game Fair Park lead by a score of 19 - 6 after the first quarter.  Although the Raiders closed the gap to five by halftime, the Indians returned after halftime to make an impression.  The crowd was entertained by great defensive plays, key steals, super outside and inside shooting and outstanding ball and clock control.  The final score was 62 - 49.  This will mark the second time the Indians beat the Raiders in tournament play this year.  Antonio Seamster, a senior,  was named to the All-Tournament team.  Senior Marckus Jackson was recognized as the tournament's Most Valuable Player.  Congratulations, Indians!

JUMP Students Participate in Emergenetics Seminar

Some 248 JUMP students participated in the STEP Seminar on November 30 and December 1 in the auxiliary gymnasium at Fair Park.  Earlier during the summer and in October, Fair Park faculty completed the STEP (Student-Teacher Emergenetics Profile) and was in-serviced on how this could improve student achievement.  By extending the STEP experience for students, an even greater arena is created for student improvement. At the STEP Seminar for Students, each student was given an individualized STEP Profile, and based on their unique profiles, students learned skills to improve academic performance, foster better relationships and build self-esteem. They were also taught to understand their own motivation for learning and use this information to master new subjects. And more than just learning better, the STEP seminar helped students understand how their behavior affects others’ perceptions so they can become more confident and self-accepting.  The administration and staff and student body is appreciative of the generosity of Mrs. Ann Stokes who provided tables and chairs for the seminar to take place which accommodated nearly 90 students per session.  Mr. Brando, facilitator, Mrs. Chris Weaver along with Mrs. Lola Kendricks are also appreciated.

Indians Finish Year at 5-5

The Fair Park High Indians finished their year at 5-5 under new head coach Lent Bursey on Friday, November 3, 2006.  The team had been named the KTBS Landers-Dodge Athletes of the Week in late October for their overall improvement and for playoff implications should they finish the year as the third placed team in District I-3A.  With a record of 4-5 headed into the final week of district play, the Indians would have to beat Mansfield to be considered for the state playoffs.  The Indians rallied late in a tough fought battle.  After falling behind two touchdowns with less than three minutes to play, the Indians scored twice and tied the score with 14 seconds left to send the game into overtime.  Fair Park won the toss and elected to try the first series of downs.  They scored to send the score to 40-33.  It would be the Wolverines chance.  On the second down, the Indians intercepted the ball at the one yard line to win.  They finished 3-2 in district.  Now the wait would be on to see if they scored enough Power Points to earn a playoff berth.  The coaches and team would find out late Sunday afternoon, November 5 that they missed the playoffs by  one Power Point ranking edging up to the 33rd team in 3-A.  (Only the top 32 teams earned playoff berths.)  At a team meeting on Monday morning, November 6, Coach Bursey and Principal Daigle told the team how proud they were of their accomplishments for the year.  They were congratulated for having one of the best records for a Fair Park football team in over 10 years.  Great job, Indians!

JUMP Ends First Year

The JUMP Program ended its first year with the end of school for students.  The administrative team and teachers are analyzing data to study the effectiveness of the first year program.  Preliminary indications show that nearly 90% of the students enrolled in JUMP have earned enough credits to be sophomores as opposed to 47% or less in previous years.  Reading scores also show improvement from pre-test, mid-test and post-test data.  Additional information will be reported after all data are analyzed.

Basketball Champions

The Fair Park Indian basketball brought home the highest honor in high school athletics by winning the state 3-A Basketball Championship Title at Lafayette in March.  This marks the first time the team has won the trophy outright after several tries to the state tournament in recent years.  The last championship honors for basketball was 43 years ago when the Fair Park team won in Class 2-A.  Coach Ron Preston commended his young and talented team for their outstanding athletic abilities and great attitudes.  He said that the young men are champions on and off the basketball court.  The team was recognized by the Caddo Parish School Board, the City of Shreveport, Caddo Parish Commission, the Fair Park PTA, various clubs and organizations of the school.  An outpouring of congratulatory comments were received from alumni and friends.  Fair Park honored the championship team at a Championship Banquet held at the University Club in Shreveport.  Mr. Clem Henderson, coach of the 1963 Championship team, was the special guest at the banquet.  Congratulations to the Indian Basketball team and Coaches Preston, Haynes and Reese.

Wiley Retires After 40 Years

Mr. Joe Wiley, Art Education teacher at Fair Park, has retired after giving 40 years to educating children in Caddo Parish schools.  Mr. Wiley began his teaching career at Herndon High School and was one of the first African American teachers to Fair Park High.  At Fair Park, Mr. Wiley taught all levels of Art as well as courses in Social Studies.  His students excelled.  Much of the artwork seen around campus was done by Mr. Wiley and his students.  Of particular note--Mr. Wiley had Perfect Attendance for 38 of the 40 years, missing less than five days over that span of time.  Wow!!!  Congratulations, Mr. Wiley, on your retirement.  Our hats are off to you.
