Medical Careers Magnet
Fair Park Medical Careers Magnet Program is the first program of its type in the State of Louisiana. It exposes students to health care and medical careers through academic classes, field observations and practical skills training. Students from across the parish who meet magnet requirements are allowed to attend the magnet program from their home schools.

How does the half-day program work with home schools? Freshmen and Sophomores attend MCM in the morning for three periods (Math, Science and Medical Elective) and return to their home schools for English, Physical Education, and Civics, etc. Juniors and Seniors attend MCM in the afternoons for three periods and complete the other requirements for graduation at their home schools in the morning |

Is transportation available for my child? Transportation is available to all Caddo Parish residents. Buses transport students from the ten area high schools for the half-day program and return them to their home schools each day. |

What about lunch? Students eat lunch at their home schools each day. |

Will my child miss out on activities at the home school? Students are frequently excused to attend most school functions including major pep rallies, special homecoming activities, functions associated with JROTC, Band, and athletic competitions if they are participants in a particular sport. |

Can my child complete the TOPS requirements if he is enrolled in MCM? Yes, students can complete the requirements for TOPS while enrolled in MCM. Careful planning and selection of courses and electives is essential. Parents and students should work very closely with the MCM teachers and counselors to ensure the necessary courses are selected each year. |

What happens if my child wears a uniform to his home school? Students that attend high schools that require uniforms are allowed to attend MCM in their uniforms. Home school uniforms must still meet the Caddo Parish dress code for appropriate length for shorts and skirts. In addition, shirt tails must be tucked in at all times and belts must be visible. |

How can students attend three classes at MCM and three classes at the home schools and still get out on time? MCM classes are 45 minutes each as opposed to 55 minutes. The shortened class periods allow for transportation time. First period begins at 9:00 each morning and their period ends at 11:25 each morning. In the afternoon, fourth period begins at 12:30 and sixth period ends at 2:55 each day. |

How does the altered MCM class schedule impact the Fair Park High School class schedule? Because of the altered bell schedule, MCM students rarely interact with the Fair park students. Change of classes occurs at different intervals for MCM students and Fair Park students and they are generally not on the halls at the same time. |
